Student Experience
At CSU, journalism and media communication students can build leadership skills, professional networks, and lasting community through a wide range of student-run organizations and department groups.
Through student-run media, professional organizations, campus productions, internships, and education abroad, you’ll discover the kind of storyteller, communicator, or creator you want to become while developing the practical skills and confidence to launch a career.
Internships
Internships give students the chance to apply classroom learning in real, professional settings. Journalism and media communication students have interned with news organizations, TV stations, production companies, public relations and advertising agencies, and corporate media relations departments, gaining industry insight and connections and building experience that translates directly into careers after graduation.

Education Abroad
The Department of Journalism and Media Communication offers several opportunities for students to study abroad while completing their degree, including faculty-led programs tailored to journalism and media interests.
Scholarships
The Department of Journalism and Media Communication offers a variety of scholarships to qualified JMC majors. Scholarships are awarded through the CSU Scholarship Application (CSUSA), which is available online October 1 through March 1. Find up-to-date JMC scholarship information on the College of Liberal Arts scholarship webpage.
Undergraduate Research
Undergraduates have the opportunity to engage in research alongside faculty mentors, contributing to projects that explore how communication shapes public understanding. This work builds on research and analytical skills that complement classroom learning and strengthen students’ portfolios.
Center for Science Communication
The Center for Science Communication brings together faculty and students researching how science, health, and environmental issues are communicated to the public. Students participate through internships, part-time positions, and class projects tied to faculty research.
Strategic Communication Center
The Strategic Communication Center gives students engaged research and industry experience through a student-run public relations and advertising agency, where students build campaign strategy, conduct research, and connect with industry professionals.
Events & Opportunities
Throughout the year, journalism and media communication students can connect with faculty, alumni, and fellow students through department celebrations, guest speakers, and other engagement opportunities. Signature events like Clarkchella, an annual celebration of journalism and media communication, bring the department together to recognize student work and build community outside the classroom.
VIDA: Learning Community
VIDA is a first year Residential Learning Community that helps students build community, explore interests, and connect those interests to academics and careers. Open to Liberal Arts majors, including journalism and media communication, and Exploratory Studies students in select tracks, VIDA offers peer support, faculty engagement, and interactive events in Parmelee Hall’s suite-style environment.
