Students in the journalism and media communication department can find new ways to grow their talents and skills both in and out of the classroom.

Student Experience

Through their involvement in student organizations, nationally recognized clubs and chapters, and education abroad, JMC students are not only building a resume, but also learning to tell their story. Additionally, the department offers support resources for students, including a large first-generation community and department specific scholarships.

RMSM: Rocky Mountain Student Media

The Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation offers students practical experience producing media for the campus community. The student-run media organization includes the Rocky Mountain Collegian, Campus Television (CTV), KCSU-FM radio, and College Avenue magazine. The organization provides students with outstanding professional experience that is valued highly by Colorado media managers who make hiring decisions.

PRSSA: The Public Relations Student Society of America

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is the nation’s largest professional organization serving the public relations industry with a mission to “make communications professionals smarter, better prepared, and more connected through all stages of their career.” PRSSA is the student chapter of this professional organization and focuses on providing meaningful experiences for all students with an interest in the public relations field.

SPJ: The Society of Professional Journalists

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is an organization open to any student interested in a career in journalism. SPJ hosts guest speakers, holds social events, attends regional and national conferences, and promotes the values of quality journalism. The CSU SPJ chapter is affiliated with the national SPJ organization, which has more than 6,000 members. Founded in 1909, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry, works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development, and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.

SCC: Science Communication Club

The Science Communication Club (SCC) incorporates students from multiple disciplines across the campus that are interested in exploring careers in science communication. To further students' professional development, the Club runs workshops and invites speakers from across campus, local non-profits, and government organizations to share their work with students. Club members also have the opportunity to collaborate directly with Center for Science Communication faculty members to organize events and contribute to CSC research and creative scholarship in science communication.

Scholarships

The JMC department offers a variety of scholarships to qualified JMC majors. Scholarships are awarded through the CSU Scholarship Application (CSUSA), which is available online October 1 through March 1. Education Abroad

Students in journalism and media communication have many options to study abroad while completing their degree, including faculty-led programs and interdisciplinary semesters. Students interested in education abroad opportunities are encouraged to talk to their Academic Advisor to help fit the experience into their degree roadmap.

Semester At Sea

Semester at Sea is a multiple country study abroad program open to students of all majors emphasizing comparative academic examination, hands-on field experiences, and meaningful engagement in the global community.

Students live, take coursework, and travel aboard the MV World Odyssey ship as a part of a unique shipboard community comprised of students, faculty, staff, lifelong learners, and ship crew for 100+ days, exploring at least 10 countries and 4 continents.

International Travel Journalism in Croatia

The JMC International Travel Journalism in Croatia program is a two-week study abroad opportunity for students interested in travel journalism and media. The trip is split between one week on land visiting the major cities and a week on a ship traveling to a new exotic island and port each day. Students will experience the history, culture, architecture, and food of Croatia while also learning about how to tell the story of a foreign country to an international audience.

International Media Studies in Europe

PROGRAM TERM: Summer

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: JTC 454A (3 Credits)

Spend part of your summer in Europe! This two-week education abroad program in Lisbon and Madrid will provide students with the chance to explore and compare the world of media and culture in Spain and Portugal. Participants will visit newsrooms and meet with broadcast, print and online journalists. They also will meet with media professionals in advertising, public relations, social media, entertainment, or related areas.

Education Opportunity for Content Creators & Citizen Journalists

During the spring 2026 semester, JMC partnered with CSU Extension, AdFontes Media and Colorado Media Project to develop a four-part webinar series designed just for content creators across Colorado. With the goal of applying traditional journalism concepts to digital-first (often social media-first) content, JMC faculty members and industry experts developed four two-hour sessions.
